Good evening, and thanks for joining us
Like many, I grew up watching local news.
I remember being mesmerized each night by the voices of familiar faces and the moving images dancing across my family's bulky, cathode-ray TV screen as our local station broadcasted to thousands of other households.
We were a "TV family," and I consumed hundreds of hours of nightly newscasts and local programming. Perhaps this is a chief reason why I became a journalist.
I began this project in early-2020 after I brought along an old film camera to an assignment with the idea of shooting portraits of the reporter I was working with.
I soon found that I wanted to document what happens behind the scenes of those who "gather the news," and give a brief look into the moments leading up to a newscast before the voices and faces of anchors and reporters are sent sailing through the airwaves.
I decided to capture these moments primarily on Kodak Portra 800 - a discontinued camera film - in homage to the times when I and many others sat down every night and watched the news flicker across thousands of pixels.
This ongoing project is dedicated to the industry I cherish and to journalists everywhere covering their communities - with pens and lenses and teleprompters.
And to those old, bunny-eared television sets too.
